Welcome to Hungary

The Republic of Hungary is situated in the Carpathian Basin, in the heart of Europe, with a territory of 93,000 m2 and population of 10.1 million. Hungary is considered as a traditional link between East and West in the continent. This is a democratic country keeping active political, economical and cultural connections with her European neighbors and many countries around the world. It is a signatory of several international treaties including the European Union membership.

Hungary is full of beautiful and diversified scenery, its flora and fauna is rich and special. There are lower mountains and hills in the northern and western areas and the eastern part is reserved by the Great Plain, the land of the famous Hungarian „PUSZTA”. Several towns and villages have preserved historical buildings, churches, castles and other monuments since the middle ages especially in the northern and western regions of the country.
Budapest, the capital and the centre of political, economical, scientific and cultural life, lies in the meeting point of international transport routes and is the city of the biggest and most respected Hungarian universities. Budapest is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, attracts millions of foreign visitors annually and hosts, among others, international festivals, scientific conferences, cultural and sport events.

Tourists and internationals living in Hungary generally say that Hungarians are very friendly, helpful and open to talk about themselves. Hungarian hospitality is wellknown as well as the famous and delicious Hungarian cuisine. Pécs, Miskolc, Szeged and Debrecen are the other significant centers of higher education, especially in medicine, business and engineering. Miskolc is located in the northern part of Hungary, Debrecen and Szeged, the 'City of the Sun', are the biggest towns of the Great Plain, situated in the East.

Their universities attract thousands of Hungarian and international students seeking quality education, wishing to study in an international environment and to enjoy the teeming student life. The natural beauty of these cities, the friendly atmosphere of smaller towns, the several cultural and scientific events organised annually make them a pleasant place of living and studying. Pécs is the fifth largest city in Hungary with a population of 180000. It is situated in the southeastern part of Transdanubia, bordered by Croatia in the south. Pécs has a Mediterranean-like climate affected by the Adriatic sea. The city is 2000 years old. It hosts many museums, exhibitions and cultural events. The university, founded in 1367, was reorganized in 1923. The total number of students currently studying at higher education institutions in Pécs is around 12000. Hungarian higher education has a long and strong history. Hungarian inventors, physicists, mathematicians and medical doctors have considerably contributed with their achievements to the world of science. The golden age of modern Hungarian natural sciences started in the early 20th century. Between 1905 and 2002, 13 scientists won the Nobel Prize, such as Albert Szent-Györgyi for discovering Vitamin C or Dénes Gábor for creating the first hologram. Names of János Neumann (developed the first electronic computer) or Leó Szilárd (participated in building the first atomic reactor) or Ignanc Semmelweis (the physician who saved the mothers lives by preventing puerperal fever) are also respected internationally.
